Ian Moss named Australia’s greatest guitarist

Legendary Cold Chisel axe man, Ian Moss, has topped a new News Corp poll asking Australian musicians who the country’s greatest ever guitarist is.

Moss, who is usually recognised more for his incredible and iconic song writing rather than his guitar playing, beat out many other fancied rivals, including AC/DC’s Angus Young and virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel.

The poll, which exclusively asked some of Australia’s biggest names in music their opinions, saw a unique and interesting compilation of 25 guitarists that differs greatly from the typical and predictable guitar magazine or Rolling Stone style lists.

The guitarist for rising Melbourne rockers, Kingswood, Alex Laska, was quoted as one of Moss’ biggest supporters and pointed to the subtlety and emotion of Moss’ playing that makes him great.

“His musical capabilities are simply fantastic. Moss can deliver subtlety with intensity, intensity with subtlety, complete dedication to the sentiment of what he is conveying but without overlooking what is clearly an inherent musical constitution.”

Interestingly, second in the list was Malcolm Young, named ahead of his usually more-fancied brother Angus, who came in all the way down at seven.

Contemporary guitarists also made the list, with The Living End’s Chris Cheney coming in at three, recognised for his commanding showmanship particularly at festivals, and The Drones’ frontman Gareth Liddiard, whose intensity and angular style has carved him cult status away from the more mainstream players on the list.
